Bobby gives us the inside story to Mass of St. John. How does this setting engage parishioners at Mass?
In my travels I've had opportunities to lead worship in a variety of settings. I have found that stylistically what works for one group may not work at all for another. I approached the composition of Mass of St. John with the idea that each group that uses it will interpret it, using tempos and styles that fit their own particular community. My primary goal was to write a setting that was interesting and could be learned easily by a congregation.

What was your inspiration for Mass of St. John?
The original inspiration for me was the texts themselves and a desire to use music to help make them more accessible and understandable at a deeper level. As I prayed the texts, an avenue opened through which to musically express the emotions and energy. Throughout the composition/editing process I found myself straightening out some of the rhythms and shortening the range in order to strike a balance between musically interesting and congregation friendly. « Hide
