Timothy gives us the inside story to Mass of the Sacred Heart. How does this setting engage parishioners at Mass?
The music is designed first and foremost for assembly singing. I think we all face the initial challenge of accepting and embracing changes to words we can recite in our dreams. But as the assembly gets to know the new texts, they will gain a familiarity and appreciation for many of the changes, which are meant to be more accurate to the original Latin texts.

What was your inspiration for Mass of the Sacred Heart?
As the years pass, I continue to gain a greater appreciation of Jesus’ example of leadership through service and humility. So to me as a composer, that means suppressing internal questions such as, “Is this harmony interesting enough? Is this melody expansive enough?” The more important questions are, “Can a community sing this? Is this music enhancing or impeding the prayerfulness?” My hope is that this Mass can be embraced by a broad scope of worshiping communities, from very simple to more heavily orchestrated music ministries. « Hide
