Ricky gives us the inside story to Mass of Spirit and Grace. How does this setting engage parishioners at Mass?
Liturgy celebrates, among other things, unity in diversity. For this reason, I chose to write a multilingual setting of the Prayers of the Faithful. One of the best moments to celebrate cultural diversity is during the Prayers of the Faithful. This setting can be sung in 24 different languages—Cantonese, Celtic, English, Filipino, French, German, Greek, Hmong, Igbo (Nigerian), Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lao, Latin, Malayalam (India), Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Tongan and Vietnamese.

What was your inspiration for Mass of Spirit and Grace?
I thought about the assembly voice first: e.g., "Can my mother sing this melody a cappella?" and if not, I threw it away. At the same time, I wanted to write strong melodies and harmonies to keep their interest. Keeping the needs of music and liturgy directors in mind, I actually set to music (verbatim!) ALL of the Sunday Gospel verses which are found in the Lectionary (150+!). Singing the assigned verse(s) of the particular Sunday celebration forms a perfect liturgical, theological and scriptural marriage between the Gospel acclamation verse and the Gospel reading. « Hide
