Mass of the Pilgrim Church is a complete and practical Mass for the people of God, and this striking Mass setting takes its rhythms from Catholic ritual. John accentuates the continuity found in the Mass parts by composing a single, easy-to-learn theme for acclamations that's sure to become an assembly favorite.
John writes faithfully for the needs of the assembly. Though easy to sing, the setting is rich in its spiritual and theological complexity. Its strong melodies succeed whether accompanied by organ, piano or guitar. Instrumentalists will enjoy the parts for flute, oboe, one or two trumpets, brass quartet and strings.
There are settings for the Sprinkling Rite and Lord, Have Mercy, plus a new style of Responsorial Psalm. Two Alleluias offer a festive approach and John has written an integrated approach to the General Intercessions. The Eucharistic Prayer is unusually expressive and includes an alternate setting for less solemn occasions. The closing hymn is dynamic.
