Voices from the Valley
Hymn Texts with Biblical Reflections
Genevieve Glen, OSB
Each of the 42 original hymn texts includes an inspiring commentary by Sister Genevieve, suggestions for liturgical use, Scripture references, meter and hymn tune suggestions.
Voices from the Valley is the second collection of hymn texts from one of the most gifted poets in the Church today. Sister Genevieve writes from the Benedictine Abbey of St. Walburga in Virginia Dale, Colorado, which sits in a valley where the high plains meet the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
The title of the collection comes from both her beautiful home and her hymn "Upon Your Holy Mountain," whose last stanza reads: "With you, upon your mountain,/ Dwell all your holy ones./ Their brightness, like a mirror''s,/ Outrivals moons and suns./ Our voices from the valley/ Rise up in urgent prayer:/ Come, Christ, and make us holy,/ That we may join them there!"
Each of the 42 original hymn texts includes an inspiring commentary by Sister Genevieve, suggestions for liturgical use, Scripture references, meter and hymn tune suggestions. The second half of the book presents each text set to a traditional hymn tune. There are hymns for Advent, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Ordinary Time, morning, evening and night prayer, penance services, saints'' days, anointing of the sick and general use.
Drawing from the best hymnody of several traditions, Voices from the Valley is a truly catholic resource, providing Christian texts and music that can serve a variety of liturgical and non-liturgical celebrations.

"Genevieve Glen has a wonderful gift for lifting out metaphors from the scriptures and shaping texts which express the Church''s prayer. Included are texts for the liturgical year, daily prayer, and sacramental rites. Every serious pastoral musician will want a copy of this collection both for their personal prayer and for communal song. Highly recommended."
