This young Louisiana-based singer-songwriter is the next big thing. Just ask anyone who was at NCYC 2007. Or those who caught her fall tour with Matt Maher and Josh Blakesley. At these unofficial premieres, Kelly Pease was an official sensation. This self-titled CD, her first release, introduces the rest of us to her surprisingly powerful music. Her first release: a seven-track extended single A seven-track, 28-minute extended single, the disc presents six new songs -- five written or co-written by Kelly -- and a short spoken testimony. Her songs take a refreshingly honest approach to life and faith: there's room for ups and downs. In the midst of an inconsistent world, she reminds us, God is consistent. Cover of a popular song by CCM artist John Waller The disc opens with "Crown," a cover of the popular song by CCM artist John Waller. Sporting a contagious refrain and edgy guitars, it's a serious rock anthem that sets things straight: worship goes to God alone: "we the created crown you creator now." Sweet ballads, musical prayers for Christian unity "One" is a musical prayer for Christian unity -- a big priority for Kelly, who's very committed to ecumenism. The refrain hints at music's potential role: "One king, one cross, one hope, one throne, one million voices sing one song." "Who Is to Come" is a sweet ballad with a bold message: "we have come to heaven's door," even here and now. Gritty, up-tempo rock gems One of the best tracks is "Original," co-written by John Waller. A gritty, up-tempo rock gem, it's a manifesto for all who doubt their calling, identity or God's love: "I don't have to look, think, talk, sound, walk like anyone else." "I Sing" offers an alternative to self-pity after a breakup: "I sing of the friendship my Savior shares with me." Finding healing and hope after tragedy "Kelly's Testimony" tells the story of her dad's tragic death and how, in that time of grief, she found consolation in Christ and his cross. The final track, "Making Space," is a gorgeous song that opens with longing for the dad she never knew. It closes with this hope: God is a loving Father who's "making space for me" in heaven. Blessed with a fabulous voice and wisdom beyond her years, Kelly Pease is one of contemporary Catholic music's new rockets. And this disc is her launching pad. Watch for her to climb high quickly.
