Pastors and liturgical educators alike have been in need of a practical tool to improve the proclamation skills of liturgical readers. Mary Lyons book is an answer to their prayers.
I heartily recommend this book for its clear explanation of the complex dynamics of oral communication and proclamation in the liturgy. Her engaging style respects the proclaimer of Gods Word as a person, encouraging the right use of body, breath, and soul in service to the Church.
Rev. Monsignor James P. Moroney, (former) Executive Director, Secretariat for the Liturgy (USCCB)
This is a singular book. Ms. Lyons covers every aspect of the ministry of the Wordand with such thoroughness, applicability and respect that it is a must-have resource for every lector in every parish in every city of America. Proclaiming the Word effectively requires preparedness, right attitude, proper deliver and right demeanorqualities not always in evidence, sad to say. The Lector discusses those qualities and offers clear, specific steps to achieve them. It is more a companion/mentor than a book. I strongly recommend the book as required reading.

Lectors and those who select and train them will find Mary Lyons book The Lector: Effective Delivery of the Word helpful in further development of this important ministry. Lyons background and experience as a professional singer and performer enables her to bring attention to elements of the ministry often overlooked, i.e., techniques of public speaking. However, since she has been a lector herself for many years, she is sensitive to the broader demands of ministry as well as the specific skills and practice necessary for effective proclamation of the Word. This combination is a valuable resource for all who proclaim the Scriptures.
Anyone looking for a resource to focus on techniques of public speaking would find this book very specific and thorough. Even choir directors would find some enrichment in its reading.

I began reading this book with less than an open mind. And now I have to admit that I was impressed; very impressed. This is a very fine workwell written, practical, gentle, clear, doesnt pull punches. It claims to be for aspiring, novice, or seasoned lectors; I would add that it should be a must read (really study) for all cantors and choir members as well. Her remarks on technique go to the growth of the whole person, and perhaps this is the greatest of the books many strengths. Highly, highly recommended.
