Bio

Franciscan Father Gilbert Ostdiek is a professor of liturgy at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and director of the Institute for Liturgical Consultants, a program for those involved in renovating and building places of worship.

He holds an STL, STD, and LG from the Pontifical Athenaeum Antonianum in Rome. A founding faculty member, Father Ostdiek seeks to explore the non-verbal languages of liturgy and draw on anthropology and ritual studies to understand how sacraments take on meaning in the community. He is particularly interested in the translation of liturgical texts, having served on the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) for many years.

He is also interested in liturgical spirituality and in the shaping of places for worship. He is the author of Catechesis for Liturgy.
