Mandatum Novum

A study in contrasts, this piece alternates between metered, homophonic, divisi SATB choral sections in Latin (John 13:34) and unison (or solo) chanted sections in English (from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John). Dense harmonic writing and tight vocal sonorities make this piece suitable for more advanced choirs. The mostly syllabic setting of this text, fashioned after Eastern Orthodox traditions, means that the lyrics are always clear and understandable.
