This clever juxtaposition and combination of two well-known Christmas carols (MUELLER and the Polish carol, W ZLOBIE LEZY), scored for two-part chorus, keyboard, guitar, and cello is sure to delight. Additional parts for double bass and glockenspiel are available as a separate download. Introduced by melodic fragments that are somewhat motivic to both carols, verse 1 eventually emerges with the familiar “away in a manger” lyrics. Verse 2, using the same melody, is in canon. Verse 3 introduces the Polish carol and the fourth verse combines the two.

Lyrics
1.
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head;
The stars in the sky looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
2.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes;
I love you, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.
3.
Infant holy, infant lowly, For his bed a cattle stall;
Oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the babe is Lord of all.
Swift are winging, angels singing, Noels ringing, tidings bringing:
Christ the babe is Lord of all, Christ the babe is Lord of all.
4.
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children in your tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with you there.
