Bio

OCP recognizes the profound harm caused by sexual abuse and remains committed to supporting survivors and fostering safe and respectful environments within the Church. We understand that decisions involving individuals who have been accused of misconduct require particular care, compassion, and thoughtful consideration.

In 2023, OCP removed the music of Father Ernie Sands from its publications and digital offerings following concerns related to allegations of sexual misconduct made against him. Father Sands died in 2016, before those allegations could be resolved through civil or ecclesiastical proceedings. As a result, no formal determinations or findings of guilt or innocence were reached.

Following a careful and prayerful review of the circumstances, including consultation with a professional ethicist and consideration of all available information, OCP has decided to restore the music of Father Sands to its catalog, including its availability in our publications. This decision reflects our commitment to balancing the seriousness of allegations of abuse with fairness, compassion, and the pastoral needs of the communities we serve, many of whom have requested and continued to use the songs. It does not diminish the gravity of such allegations or represent a determination regarding their validity, but reflects our judgment that restoring access to these compositions is an appropriate and reasonable course of action.

We recognize that individuals and communities may have different perspectives on the use of this music. Restoring its availability does not imply an expectation that any parish or community include these compositions in their worship. We respect the pastoral judgment of local church leaders and the needs and sensitivities of the faithful they serve.

OCP remains steadfast in its commitment to the dignity of every person, the pastoral care of survivors of abuse, and the responsible stewardship of sacred music. We will continue to approach these difficult matters with compassion, integrity, and fidelity to our mission of serving the Church.
