The Mass of the Mystical Body of Christ was composed with a focus on assembly participation, providing melodies that are attainable for all voice types and skill levels. Accessibility and service to the people being the main goal, the setting’s central melodies at times resemble chant, but also reflect 21st century harmonic sensibilities and complexities. The setting’s intention of being in service to the people’s voice was motivated by the composers’ experiences of serving at Mass, particularly, the timeless nature of the sacrament at the altar, where all of Heaven and Earth sing together. This expression of unity in the Eucharist is what inspired the compositional approach and the title of the setting, which signifies our intimate spiritual union with Christ as the head and we believers as the body.
