In this beautiful anthem for SATB choir and piano, Modlin deftly pairs the musical mood with Glen’s poignant text, which highlights not only the humble, fragile state in which Jesus was born—contrary to expectations—but also foreshadows the Passion. It is liturgically appropriate throughout the season of Christmas. Musically, the texture builds from a unison melody on verse 1, through two-part writing on verse 2, to a full choral treatment in verses 3–4.
